OVERLAYS VS CROWNS
OVERLAY
Overlays vs Crowns or indirect restorations are dental restorations fabricated in a laboratory setting with the aim of repairing the tooth as if it were intact.
However, these restorations can be classified as Onlays and Inlays. These indirect restorations can be made from various materials such as composite resins and ceramics.
What are the advantages of these restorations?
- Control of polymerization shrinkage;
- Increased material stiffness;
- Ideal control;
- Achieving proper contact points to avoid food retention.
DENTAL CROWN
Importantly, dental crowns are applied over a patient’s natural tooth and are based on a fixed prosthetic restoration (cemented or bonded) to rebuild it.
Besides, crowns are more indicated for posterior teeth where conventional restorations cannot restore the proper form and strength to the tooth. This includes teeth that have been damaged by extensive decay, with significant loss of dental tissue, wear, fractures, or those that have undergone root canal treatment.
Note that there are various types of dental crowns. These include ceramic crowns, which are the most commonly used and offer excellent aesthetics, as well as metal and zirconia crowns.
In conclusion, crowns offer greater mechanical strength and aesthetics when attempting to achieve the proper arch impression in the oral cavity. They also provide increased durability to the tooth after a root canal treatment, thus promoting greater patient satisfaction.
